Monkeying around

Monkeying around
Originally uploaded by the golbys.
Kathleen is on the move! Well, not on the move so much as on the scoot. She likes to scoot around, especially when she's on her back. When I went in to pick her up from her nap this afternoon I discovered she had pushed herself up into the corner of the crib, even though she was in the middle when she was put down. Thank goodness for the crib's bumpers! Kathleen scoots around under her play gym, too. And she discovered that if she scoots to the edge of it and kicks the bars hard enough, she can topple the whole thing right over!

Kathleen isn't as fond of lying on her stomach. She knows how to roll from her stomach to her back, so generally if you lay her on her belly, she'll just roll over to her back. And then she'll suck her toes. She won't roll from her back, because she's so happy sucking her toes. Since she loves her monkey, we use it as an incentive sometimes. If she's on her stomach, she'll scoot forward a tiny bit to grab the monkey, and then roll over to her back to play with him.

Pineapple Princess

Jim generally manages to escape work a bit early on Thursdays, so last Thursday afternoon we packed up and headed for the North Shore. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon, and the three of us got to spend a few hours of it at Waimea Bay. We're getting a little braver about letting Kathleen in the sun -- once we had slathered her with some super-strength sunscreen, she modeled her new swimsuit.
We know she really wants to go surfing, but she settled for hanging out in her seat on the sand and occasionally dipping her toes in the water. Kathleen hasn't gone for a real swim yet. She enjoys her bath at night, so we're pretty sure she'll like the ocean, too. However, the North Shore isn't really the place for a first excursion into the ocean (it's a little too rough right now), but we know that's coming soon. We'll have a mermaid on our hands in no time!

Polo in Paradise

The Golbys together

We spent Mother's Day afternoon on the North Shore, at the Hawaii Polo Club. We joined some friends for a picnic and our first (non-water) polo match. The tickets to the event read "Polo in Paradise" -- and that wasn't a bad description of the day! We had good food, good company, amazing weather, and polo. (We haven't quite figured out what we think of polo.) The location was incredible -- in the photo with the beach behind us, the field is maybe 20 feet in front of us!

Relaxing at the beach

Relaxing at the beach

Kathleen is adjusting well to life in Hawaii. After hosting a house-warming party on Friday night, she decided to spend Saturday morning lounging at home. Saturday afternoon she headed out for the beach, where she drove the boys crazy with her stylish sun hat.

We spent all afternoon at the Ko'Olina lagoons. The man-made lagoons are part of a resort, but are open to the public. We were able to stake out a spot on the lawn under the shade of a palm tree, where Kathleen happily sucked on her toes. We were only fifty or a hundred feet from the warm water, so it was easy to take turns swimming and watching Kathleen. When we'd had our fill of sun and sand, we headed home for dinner. It's hard to believe we could have a lazy morning, a long afternoon at the beach, and a leisurely dinner at home -- all in the same day. Seriously, people: move to Hawaii... or at least visit!

A Weekend of Work

Hanging Pictures
Originally uploaded by the golbys.
We spent Saturday finishing up some of the last details of moving in: taking our cast-offs to the Salvation Army and hanging pictures. Kathleen supervised the picture hanging. An effective manager, Kathleen ensured that the project was finished before dinner. Next weekend's project: painting Kathleen's room!

We're Home!

After two months of traveling and hotel living, we've finally moved into a place of our own. Hooray!

We've been in our condo for almost a week now, and we're getting pretty well settled. Kathleen is delighted (can't you tell?) to have her own crib and toys back. And all of us are happy to have more than one room to live in!

Kathleen has grown and changed so much in the past two months, and she learns new things every day. Now that we have our computer back, we'll be a lot more faithful about posting again.
